April Showers Bring May Flowers… and Allergies.

For many, spring brings allergies; this was certainly true for me. Growing up I had severe allergies, particularly in the spring. My parents took me to allergy specialist after allergy specialist who gave me over-the-counter medications and prescription medications, and nothing really helped. My eyes were always bloodshot. I had to carry tissues all the time and was on and off various medications. It was miserable. It got to a point where I really couldn’t function in school. I couldn’t see the blackboard, and I also couldn’t perform athletically.

Often the go-to treatment for allergies is an anti-inflammatory injection. These treatments have their time and place, and can often give some temporary and minimal relief, which can be an incredible gift for a person. However, consider what actually is happening in the body. An allergic reaction is a sensitivity to something that causes an increased inflammatory response throughout a person’s body. Taking an anti-histamine just reduces the body’s innate response to create inflammation, but it doesn’t get to the root of the problem.

I’ve seen patient after patient improve their allergies as a result of chiropractic care. Patients who may have come in for other concerns are shocked to report that when “allergy season came around” they didn’t have any issues. They had no idea that their entire body would function differently after receiving care for their spine and nervous system.

There is a tremendous amount of literature relating to people experiencing allergy relief after receiving adjustments to their spine. One such study “Chiropractic Care of a Pediatric Patient with Asthma, Allergies, Chronic Colds & Vertebral Subluxation” stated: “There is supporting evidence that chiropractic care can help balance immune system functioning and relieve asthma symptoms as well as colds and allergies”

Please understand I am not saying that chiropractic is a treatment for allergies. When practiced appropriately, chiropractic is actually not a treatment for anything. It is a method of improving the NeuroSpinal system so that your body’s function can be optimized. A stronger, healthier, more well aligned spinal structure combined with efficient NeuroBehavior improves adaptability, improves stress response, reduces cortisol levels, alters histamine response, and the list goes on. Even more importantly, I’d like to encourage you to think of true health care completely outside of the treatment model for a moment. Treating symptoms, like allergies, only lasts so long. Rather than treating any present symptom or condition, it is far longer lasting to do things that strengthen the body’s overall wellness. Chiropractic care is focused on helping a person’s spinal and NeuroSpinal system function appropriately. Strengthening the spinal and neurospinal system can help your body adapt to all kinds of change and provides immune system improvement, inflammation response improvement, greater adaptability, and so much more.  This is why it is so common for people to experience allergy relief. When properly recommended a Chiropractic regimen is based on clinical indicators to maximize structural integrity, improve the nervous system, and the body’s perception. When that happens, all kinds of other secondary areas change, not because the practitioner is treating them directly, but because the body has been strengthened to function better with a good nerve system pure and simple.

That is exactly what happened to me as a kid; I was brought to a chiropractor for allergies, and the allergies went away. Then later on when I included chiropractic as part of my health care, all kinds of other things about my health improved. Not as a direct treatment but as a result of my body’s improved functionality.
If you find that you are struggling with allergies or other immune issues, realize that there’s a reason why your body has a hypersensitivity. Some treatments may work against your body. You might have to do a focused treatment protocol in the short term with a practitioner who specializes in allergies, however in the longer term it would be wise to boost the part of your body that coordinates your immune response to make sure it’s not reacting inappropriately.
