Antibacterial soaps and body washes are everywhere. But because they are filled with chemicals that have a spotty safety record, the FDA has proposed that the benefits of those potentially harmful ingredients need to be clearly demonstrated before our everyday consumption of these products continues. Antibacterial products are used in homes, schools, workplaces, and public settings everywhere. As a safer alternative, the FDA recommends using good old-fashioned plain soap and water to wash our hands. It has also been noted that liquid hand sanitizers do not contain the worrisome ingredients; these types of products which are left on the skin contain alcohol to kill germs and therefore aren’t lumped into the same antibacterial category previously mentioned. Headlines like these are a great reminder that natural immunity is preferred and we should always be consciously aware of the types of products we choose to consume.
